Sharpie Wall Space Prep

Prior to beginning our easy sharpie accent wall, we decided to repaint the entire powder room in Sherwin Williams Pure White. I think white is great at making small spaces appear much larger.

Visualizing The Sharpie Wall

If you’re anything like me, then you’re very much a visual person! I used blue painter’s tape to create a mock-up of the geometric lines. This process allowed me to adjust and readjust the lines until I was completely satisfied with the finished design. I then used a ruler and a pencil to draw out the lines, so I’d know exactly where to retrace with the sharpie paint pen. Here’s another highly recommended sharpie paint pen.

Best Technique to Create Clean Sharpie Lines

Initially, I was simply retracing the pencil lines with the sharpie paint pen and ruler. However, we have textured walls, and my lines we’re as clean as I wanted them to be. We decided to create a tape border around each line which gave a prettier finished look! To minimize waste, I was able to resue the blue tape for several lines before having to trash them. I love this oil-based sharpie paint pen because it’s fade, water, and abrasion-resistant. It also works really well on a variety of surfaces.

  4. I love this and have been planning to do a sharpie wall in our new home. My only question is how does it do with cleaning and wear and tear? Does this smudge or smear when cleaned or do you use something to seal the wall?

    • Hi Morgan, I haven’t had to clean this wall so I honestly can’t comment on that. We have no smudges and it’s been almost a year.

  5. Love this look! Will be doing this in my guestroom/office.

Also, anyone who may be looking for “renter friendly” wall designs could use this anywhere using black washi tape and holding a putty knife or straight edge when you tear it so you get the crisp corners. Wouldn’t work well in a full bath though because the steam may make the tape peel off.
